《睡人》第一章〈開場白〉- 左多巴現身記 譯評

《睡人》，奧利佛‧薩克斯著，范昱峰譯，時報出版：台北，1998。 Oliver Sacks, Awakenings, Random House, 1990.

[譯文] 左多巴的報告引發的瘋狂熱情，不管是來自開處方的醫生或是服用的患者，一樣令人驚訝，可是也令人聯想，這些感覺和幻想，難免過度激動和縱容。(頁20)
[原文] And the fervid enthusiasm aroused by reports of L-DOPA, both in the world at large and among physicians who give it and patients who take it- this too is amazing, and suggest that feelings and phantasies of an extraordinary nature are being excited and indulged. (p. 28)

[譯評]
1. 譯者沒有將原文中的 ‘in the world at large’ 翻出，應該補上。
2. ‘this too is amazing’，筆者認為應該指的是「連服藥的病患都....」，照理說巴金森 氏病患應該很難表達情感或興趣，但這股熱潮大到連病患都對這種藥產生興趣。
3. 第二個子句中的 ‘…are being excited and indulged.’ 為被動語法，指的是前面的 ‘feelings and phantasies of an extraordinary nature’ 被激發出來，而不是原譯文中的 ‘過度激動和縱容’。

建議改譯為：左多巴的報告在全世界掀起一股驚人的熱潮，包括開處方的醫師，甚至連服藥的病患都對它產生極大的興趣，這也意味著人們引發一種超乎尋常的情感和幻想，並且沉溺其中。

[譯文] 震顫麻痺在目前好像無法可治，對細胞纖維系統局部死亡施以解藥，就跟服用不老仙丹一樣….對於巴金森氏病施以任何細胞補藥，以圖刺激衰弱細胞，比無效還糟；我們更應該尋求可以立即吸收的食糧，以便從外部供應細胞無法從自身內部得到的。 (頁24)
[原文] Paralysis agitans seems at present an incurable malady par excellence; the antidote to the ‘local death’ of cell-fibre systems would be the equally elusive ‘elixir of life’…..It is worse than useless to administer to the Parkinsonian any kind of nerve tonic to ‘whip up’ his decaying cells; rather must some form of readily assimilable pabulum be sought, in the hope of supplying from without what the cell itself cannot obtain from within. (p. 33)

[譯評]
1. Paralysis agitans是否應譯為「震顫癱瘓」，還是都可以？此外，'par excellence' 為拉丁文，意思是「出色、極致、完全」，第一個子句是否改譯為「目前，震顫癱瘓似乎無法根治」，光以「無法可治」並沒有點出 'par excellence' 的原意。
2. ‘elusive’係「無法延長」之意，原譯文並沒有翻出來，應該補上一句「效果不持久」。
3. ‘worse than useless’是否改譯為「徹底無效」或「完全無效」，原譯文中「比無效還糟」看起來就是不通順。
4. ‘pabulum’是否改譯為「養份」，會比「食糧」來的通順些？畢竟細胞需要的是「養份」而非「食糧」吧！

建議改議為：震顫癱瘓目前似乎無法根治，針對局部死亡的細胞纖維系統施以解藥，就和服用萬靈丹一樣，只有暫時性的效果…為了企圖刺激巴金森氏病患的衰退細胞，而施以神經補藥，則完全徒勞無功；我們該做的，是找出可以立即被吸收的養份，以便從外部供應細胞無法自內部產生的成份。
